The Iota Upsilon chapter of Sigma Chi held their formal this year at the W Boston on April 30th, 2010. It was a great night, filled with food, drinks, dancing and plenty of entertainment. Below are some highlights from the night.

Sigma Chi played Pi Kappa Alpha in a football game this Sunday, April 25th. Though we came out with a loss, the chapter as a whole benefited from an awesome day of sports and brotherhood.

Derby Days

Dear Worthy Alumni,

As you may or may not know, our annual spring charity event, Derby Days, is coming up next week. Derby Days is a week full of competition amongst the Sororities on campus here at Boston University. Money is raised for the Sororities' personal philanthropies as well as our national philanthropy, The Huntsman Cancer Institute. Two years ago we brought Derby Days back to Boston University for the first time in over five years, and it was a great success, as we raised almost $4000 for Huntsman. Last year, we upped our efforts and raised a whopping $7000. This year we are hoping for an even more successful week, and we need your help! Your donations mean a lot to us, and even in tough times any donation you can make helps. Often times it is very difficult for college students to give back with such tight budgets, and that is why we are reaching out to you for your help as well. Your donation goes a long way in not only helping make our event look great, but as well as helping to save lives. Additionally, this year a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association following the February passing of our Michael DeVito as a result of a rare heart condition, making this year’s efforts in Derby Days especially important to all of us. We hope for your support.

Dear Worthy Alumni,

Welcome to another great semester here with Iota Upsilon. Once again we have elected new leadership for the fraternity. New Consul A.J. Moody ('11), Pro Consul Jackson Sandeen ('11), and Annotator Mike Lamanna ('11) are preparing the chapter for another exciting lineup of events and activities with the help of all of our new officers. The chapter is gearing up for a busy few months with the end of the 2009/2010 school year approaching. In the coming months we will present Derby Days 2010, A Kentucky Derby themed charity competition amongst the sororities on campus. As Derby Daddies Nate Thompson ('12) and Cole Barris ('11) finish the preparations for Derby Days, Philanthropy Chair Mike Anastassiou ('12) has set up a few other charity events including our upcoming bake sale with Tri Delta.

Magister Steve Lordan ('10) has ushered in another great spring pledge class for us, the Alpha Pi's (Listed below). We've all been working hard in teaching them the values that our Fraternity stands for, and we all know Stephen will continue to do a great job as we approach I-Week in approximately a month.

It has been a rough month or so for the Chapter with the passing of recent initiate, brother Michael DeVito. After visiting his family in Rye, NY for the funeral services, the chapter has since returned to Boston and begun working on different ways to honor his name. Most importantly, his memory is not forgotten from the chapter, as his enthusiasm for the fraternity and helping others continues to inspire us all everyday.

Lastly, just a friendly reminder, this coming October marks the 20th Anniversary of the chartering of the Iota Upsilon Chapter. There will be another alumni weekend planned to celebrate the occasion, and we hope to see all of you here in Boston in the fall. More details will follow.

Once again, I’d like to thank all of you who were able to come out for Alumni Weekend. I speak for our entire chapter saying that we all had an excellent time and enjoyed catching up with old friends and meeting new alumni. We hope to build on this success for our Alumni Weekend next fall, celebrating our chapter’s 20^th anniversary. Start spreading the word and let your pledge class members know so we can have an even greater turnout next year. Fall '08 Midsemester report

So far, this semester has been a strong and successful one for the Iota Upsilon chapter on many fronts. We have worked hard toward creating a very strong pledge class for the fall of 2008 thanks to the help of recruitment chair Glenn Harris (’11) and magisters Kyle Langan (’10) and A.J. Moody (’11). As of now, we have 13 pledges who are dedicated to proving to us that they obtain and hold the values of Sigma Chi highly and are capable of contributing positively to our chapter. The Alpha Nu pledge class consists of the following:

We have also had a very strong philanthropic semester thus far. We have raised money for charitable causes by holding Pie a Greek with Sigma Delta Tau, raising money for Habitat for Humanity, and by teaming up with UNICEF, raising money for underprivileged children. We also supported the Honan Fund, which looks to aid and foster local and national programs that support education, recreation, housing and healthcare, by running in the Brian Honan Road Race. Lastly, we worked toward creating a cleaner neighborhood by hosting the Allston Cleanup this month. Philanthropy chair Glenn Harris has worked hard to make sure we are active in helping the world around us. We would like to thank the alumni who donated online to UNICEF All donations are appreciated and make a difference.

This upcoming weekend, several of our brothers and our chapter advisor Ben Harris (Purdue ’04) will be driving up to Halifax, Nova Scotia to participate in our annual Province Conference. The rest of chapter looks forward to hearing about the experience and the knowledge gained that can help us become a stronger chapter.

A New "Chapter" for Iota Upsilon

In the past two weeks, there have been a lot of changes to the Iota Upsilon chapter. First, we initiated two new brothers: Matt Baginski ('11) and Adam Jendrisak ('11). We have also elected and installed officers for the upcoming year. Our new Consul, Alex Marinello, is the sole senior and will be making sure Iota Upsilon keeps heading in the right direction. Assisting him will be the new pro-consul, Alex Mazzaferro, who is entering his junior year at Boston University. The alumni will most likely be in contact with the new Tribune, Conor McManus, who has pledged to keep this blog alive and make sure alumni (new ones included) are kept up to date on all the Iota Upsilon happenings. Sigma Chi Honored by SAO

Tonight, the Iota Upsilon Chapter was honored at the Excellence in Student Activities Awards by winning the Best Philanthropy of the Year and for Brother of the Year. The Philanthropy of the Year was for our week long Derby Days event, which raised over $3,500 for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The Brother of the Year went to sophomore Kyle Langan, who worked tirelessly in not only every facet of our fraternity, but also on the executive board of the IFC.

Congratulations to both the Iota Upsilon Chapter and Kyle Langan.

The Most Awkward Lip Sync-er

Boston University Greek Week 2008 has come and gone. Events included a Lip Sync contest, Greek letters day, Greek games and special Greek speaker (the common theme being Greek). Awards were given out today and Sigma Chi was given the award for Most Helpful Fraternity. Also winning an award was Iota Upsilon's own Kyle Langan for "Most Awkward Lip Sync-er." Thanks to Brother Glenn Harris ('11) for working on Greek Week for our chapter.

The Tri Delta sorority (started at BU) won the 2008 Derby Days, squeaking out a victory over Sigma Kappa. After competing in the skit night, the car jam (photo in the post below), Boston pizza and grill night and the week long Coins for Cash, Delta Delta Delta came out as the overall winner of the most successful Derby Days in Iota Upsilon history. In all, we were able to raise over $3500 dollars for the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the sororities' philanthropies, with a large portion coming from online donations. Thanks to all the alumni who contributed.

Schedule of Events:
Sunday, March 23rd 9pm Opening Ceremonies – There will be a brief presentation about Huntsman Cancer Institute, a run down of the week’s events, and free give aways. Maximum attendance is requested.
Monday, March 24th Coins and Cash (All Week) - This event will be on going all week so this is a day off of sorts. Chapters will be given positive points for all coins in their jug and negative points for all cash (so put coins in your bin and cash in the others!)
Tuesday, March 25th 7pm – Sigma Chi and each sorority will perform a skit based on a list of “must include” words and objects. Points will be given for the best skits.
Wednesday March 26th 3:30 pm Car Stuff – The car stuff event will take place at the Greek rock. Sororities will be given points based on how many members they are able to safely “stuff” into a car within a given amount of time.
Thursday, March 27th Boston Pizza and Grill Night – BPG has agreed to give portions of all orders to Derby Days. Order food all day and give them your chapter’s flyer. Each chapter will be awarded points based on the amount of BPG they order.

IY Goes on Spring Break

March 8-15 was spring break for Boston University and 6 of the Iota Upsilon brothers went to South Padre Island, TX to get away from Midterms and the 30 degree New England weather. While there, we hit the beach with Sigs from Texas Tech, Texas A&M and pretty much every other Sigma Chi south of the Mason Dixon line. The two pictures above are from the trip, showing us proudly waving (or wearing) the flag.

They Ain't Heavy... They're Our Brothers

Yesterday, we were proud to initiate the Alpha Lambda pledge class and welcomed them into our chapter. The whole pledge and initiation process could not have been completed without the hard work of our Magister, Alex Marinello, who finished his work while battling mono.

We'd also like to thank the alumni who came to the event. Sheldon Watson came all the way from San Diego, Jon Kresser made the harrowing trip from the North End to Allston and Chad Bureau played a vital role in our event. Next initiation, we hope to have more time to get the word out to see more faces from the past.

Hello and welcome to the first post on the new Iota Upsilon blog.

For alumni of the Boston University chapter of Sigma Chi who have been receiving the semi-quarterly newsletter, we felt this might be a better way to get information to everyone quicker and more frequently. Of course, if there is any news that is chapter sensitive, then we will be sending that out via email.

The other advantages to this blog will be the ability for alumni to communicate with other alumni. For instance, if an Alumni is having an event in New York, Boston or anywhere in America, you now have a place to help get fellow brothers to that event.

But most importantly, this blog will be used to keep all Iota Upsilon up to date with the status of our chapter. We all will be hoping to hear any suggestions you may have on our new format.

Also, please be sure to check out our new facebook group. We now have made it global so any alumni, even if they are not in the BU network, can join the group.
